FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long does the first edit take?*
*Quoted times are an estimate. After I have had a chance to speak with you and look over your manuscript I can give you an exact time frame. Some manuscripts take less time than what is quoted, while others may require a bit more.
How long does the entire process take?
This depends on you, the author. After the first edit your manuscript will be returned to you, at which point you'll have the opportunity to approve or reject each individual edit. After you've had a chance to look through your manuscript thoroughly, we can discuss any further editing that may be necessary, and determine an updated time frame.
Will my manuscript be error-free after editing?
The fact is, nobody can guarantee a perfect manuscript. But yours will be returned to you as close to error-free as I am able to make it. I strongly recommend that an author read through their manuscript after editing to ensure that all mistakes have been caught, in addition to showing the manuscript to another trusted reader.
What if another reader (non-editor) finds an error after editing is complete?
Please feel free to send me the section of text! I will be happy to look over small passages again if there are concerns or if errors have been noted by others. If you find readers are noticing egregious errors (use your discretion) let's talk about it! I edit based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (a commonly used style guide in publishing). Some readers may simply be unfamiliar with that editing style.
Will I be able to work directly with my editor?
Yes. I am regularly available by email, phone or Skype. Phone conversations will ideally be scheduled at least 12 hours in advance, but I understand if an author needs to get in touch with me on short-notice. Skype meetings must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. There are also occasions where I am able to meet in person, but these must be scheduled in advance and are not guaranteed.
What are my editor's qualifications?
I hold a Bachelors of Arts in English and a Masters of Arts in Writing and Publishing, from DePaul University. I have professional experience in all the services I offer. Authors purchasing editing services for manuscripts over 25,000 words will receive a complimentary 1000-word editing sample*, to ensure you are satisfied with the quality of my work.
*Should an author choose not to utilize my services upon review of the sample, you will be charged a rate of $0.012-per word ($12.00) for the sample edits.
How and when do I pay my editor?
I will send you an invoice once I have begun edits. A 25% deposit of the full fee is due at the time of invoice, and the remainder due when you receive your edited manuscript. I accept cash, personal checks, and debit/credit cards through PayPal.
What word processing service should I use?
All editing marks will be made via track changes in Microsoft Word, unless an author has specifically requested a paper copy of proofreading marks. I strongly recommend authors use Microsoft Word, however if you are using another word processing program or a Mac you are responsible for converting your own documents into a readable format.
